The Green Gecko Project is a non-profit, non-governmental and non-political organisation that strives to provide a long-term, locally managed and staffed safe place where beggar children, street working children and/or street living can receive free education, care and the freedom to be children for a few hours a day.
Green Gecko’s intention is to provide the following care, education, guidance and support:
:: EDUCATION
- English language classes
- Remedial Khmer Language classes
- Encouragement for the children to attend main stream education by providing uniforms, books, supplies at the beginning of the school year and talking of the benefits of public school education to those who do not attend.
- integration/reintroduction of the children into the Wat Damnak Public School system
:: HEALTH
- One balanced nutritious meal per day
- Medical screening and treatment from the Angkor children’s hospital
- Care, stability and access to counselling and assistance, for children who are physically battered or psychologically in need.
- Education and counselling in health, hygiene, drug and family planning
- Age related counselling and awareness about HIV/AIDS.
:: VOCATIONAL
- Skill development and vocational guidance in the hope the children will eventually stop begging
- opportunities to expand their interests and knowledge of new subjects
- Recreational activities and performances to enhance confidence and team work eg: drama, dance, circus, gymnastics, art, & sports
- Micro businesses for families
:: SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING
- Family support and assistance for community reintegration
- Positive mentors and role models
- Morale boosting exercises: Day trips to local attractions and special outings, that would not otherwise be available to them
:: MORALITY AND BUDDHISM
- Buddhism, morality and cultural lessons provided by the monks of Wat Damnak
