young adults' program
With over half of our Geckos now young adults, it is important that Green Gecko provides
skills and opportunities for them to transition into the ‘real world’. Our Young Adults’ Program focuses on job skills such as resume writing, interview techniques and career counselling. It explores different tertiary education options from apprenticeships (both school and non-school based), vocational training and university courses; and identifies non paid/paid work experience options for others.
Each year we have more Geckos leaving the nest as they move onto bigger and greater dreams. Around September each year, we have a number of Geckos begin a new university course, start vocational studies for a dream career or move into full time work. Many of these new beginnings are happening in a different city, making leaving their Gecko family just that little bit harder. But our support for their education continues, with scholarships, setting up new homes and ensuring that a study allowance is made available for those who need it.
:: by the numbers
Raising young adults can be difficult regardless where you live or how much money you have. A parent’s dream is to get their child to 18 without any major mishaps, which makes these statistics even more astounding. As of 2016, there were 44 Geckos who had reached 18 years of age so far, out of which:
- 100% reached 18 without entering the sex industry (unlike many of their older sisters)
- 100% reached 18 without getting in trouble with the law (unlike many of their older brothers)
- 96% attended school until they were at least 18
- 100% reached 18 without getting pregnant
- 100% reached 18 without abusing drugs or alcohol.
