Gecko activities are designed to broaden the kids' horizons... and with these great subjects on their timetable, you can see how it's done!
The ancient Khmer martial art of Bokator is depicted on the walls of the temples of Angkor. The Gecko kids learn about discipline, respect, self-defence and traditional Khmer culture through their bokator classes, which are held two times per week and taught by some of the leading bokator masters in Cambodia.
Children are only children for a short time before they must take responsibility for the rest of their lives as adults. Living Values equips our eldest Geckos - physically, emotionally and mentally - to spread their wings with positive self-assurance. When the time comes to leave Gecko, they will be ready to take on the world!
Me and My Planet
Thirsty for knowledge about the world around them, the Gecko kids thrive in Me and My Planet. Topics include everything from global warming, pollution and the environment, to technology, cultures and people - and a whole lot more in between!
Getting creative in all ways, shapes and forms is the name of the game in Expressive Arts. Whether painting or drawing, sculpting, crafting or performing, our Gecko kids love to explore their creativity, express their ideas and show off their latest creations!
Preparing the Gecko kids for future work and study, Computers incorporates desktop publishing, typing, internet use and much more. Online research opportunities build computer literacy skills and also support the Geckos learning in their other subject areas.
Literacy is an integral part of our education program, especially because most of the Gecko kids started school extremely late. In Library, our Geckos explore the world of books, enjoying stories in both English and Khmer, and building a lifelong love of reading.
Performance and Music
Complementing our Bokator program, Performance and Music gives our Geckos the opportunity to learn performances and routines, as well as the traditional Khmer instruments and songs that accompany them.
Khmer Literacy and Khmer Media
The Geckos build on their reading and writing skills in their first language in Khmer Literacy, supporting their studies and learning at Khmer school. Khmer Media tests their ability to understand and comprehend using print and online resources such as newspaper articles and Cambodian websites.
Logics ensures our Geckos are switched on and all set for tomorrow's world, combining games, activities and challenges with real-life scenarios that develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Our Geckos blast off to Planet English, where they learn all about reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our lessons aim to teach English in a way that is relevant to local culture, lifestyles, everyday situations and experiences for kids living in Siem Reap.
Don't forget your tickets! Like kids everywhere, our Geckos jump at the chance to watch television... Movie Club channels their interests into an informative opportunity to explore the world around them through documentaries and films, and is followed up with time for discussion about what they've learnt.
Mastering the art of debate and building confidence through public speaking are valuable tools that our Geckos practice in Communications, learning how to express themselves clearly, how to listen and how to understand other points of view.
